Full Swing...

It's fun to break out of a usual routine and try something different.

I was recently commissioned to do a portrait of baseball great Stan Musial for a mutual friend's birthday, and was trying to figure out how to approach the painting. I've always been a fan of vintage sports card design, especially the look of the off-set printing technology at that time. I thought it would be interesting to do something similar for the painting, only with acrylics and silk screen ink.

I like the overall look to the 24" x 24" painting. The mock signature toward the bottom right was a fun addition, which I think really brought everything together.

This might be a fun side road to travel along with some new work. I have a long list of favorite baseball players that would make for interesting 'baseball card' type paintings. I've always wanted to do one of Nolan Ryan, and my uncle Martin's favorite, Warren Spahn. Mickey Mantle would be a good one, too. So many choices that this could potentially be a show unto itself sometime in the near future.

Well, there you have it...some new, post "We Are Modern" work to keep the machine still rolling.
